Couples in their 20s had their heart rates and brains monitored whilst they first melted chocolate in their mouths and then kissed.

Chocolate caused a more intense and longer lasting "buzz" than kissing, and doubled volunteers' heart rates.

The research was carried out by Dr David Lewis, formerly of the University of Sussex, and now of the Mind Lab.

Dr Lewis said: "There is no doubt that chocolate beats kissing hands down when it comes to providing a long-lasting body and brain buzz.

"A buzz that, in many cases, lasted four times as long as the most passionate kiss."

He said substances in chocolate were already known to have a psychoactive effect, but that allowing it to melt on your tongue could be the secret to maximising the buzz.

The volunteers, all aged in their 20s, had electrodes attached to their scalps and wore heart monitors during the two tests.

The researchers compared their resting heart rates with those during the chocolate and kissing tests.

Longer lasting effects

Although kissing set the heart pounding, the effect did not last as long as that seen with the chocolate, which increased heart rates from a resting rate of about 60 beats per minute to 140. The study also found that as the chocolate

ENGLISH!!!!!!!!! Cadbury!!!!!!! Cadbury is the best chocolate ever and I happen to know that eating a bar of proper Dairy Milk at an OK Go concert is one of the most wonderful things in the world.

I like chocolate, but my money's on pumpkin pie

But I don't buy any of the "better than sex" arguments. Every time I hear someone say that, I think, "This person needs to have better sex …"

As far as chocolate v. kissing, well, that depends on the kissing.

(my $.06)

OK Go is neat

I keep hearing about this chocolate.
What does it taste like compared to say, hershey's milk chocolate?
I've never really been a big chocolate person, except for the one time when I somehow got addicted to Hershey's Kisses.

Ummm, well, it's sweeter, and creamier. Also, Much more satisfying- I find myself binging less when I eat English Chocolate.

Hmm, I wonder if I'd like it.

This whole thread reminds me of my Spanish teacher last year. She had a whole drawer in her desk for her chocolate, and she'd never let anyone near it. It was so cute smile.gif

According to my parents, Hershey's tastes like cardboard in comparison to Cadbury's. I sort of have to agree, except that I love Hershey's anyway. It's like the cheap crappy stuff that you get in chocolate advent calenders wub.gif

But trust me – diabetic chocolate is WAY worse than Hershey's. I think that literally is cardboard…

and that reminds me of my nan who keeps the meat keeper in her fridge absolutely packed with every kind of chocolate you could imagine! i don't think she even eats meat, all her nutrients come from her chocolates!

oh, and cadbury is so much better than hershey's! i heard such great things about those kisses but after i tasted some i couldn't understand why you'd even bother with it!

if only cadbury made dark chocolate…

They do – it's called Bourneville Dark and it is truly brilliant. I <3 it.

You think Hershey's is bad, wait until you hear this. In the US, Cadbury chocolate isn't even really Cadbury – it's HERSHEY'S. Yep. That's right, Hershey's owns Cadbury in the US. They even have the audacity to put the Queen's seal on the label, the bastards. It's a travesty. My fellow Americans, do NOT believe the hype – American Cadbury has been in a deep depression for almost 20 years (Hershey's bought them in late 1988, my Dad was working for Cadbury at the time).

Allie, when I send the next care package I'll send some sugar-free chocolate along as well. I don't know if it'll be okay or not but it's worth a try?

Bourneville is pretty sweet. smile.gif

Hahaha my mom found your use of the word 'travesty' about the Hershey's Cadbury in the care package letter hilarious. It's definitely not as good as real Cadbury's, but I still like it!

Ooh do Hershey's do sugar-free? When I mentioned diabetic chocolate earlier I was talking about sugar-free – I've only had a couple of vaguely nice sugar-free bars. But maybe american sugar-free stuff is nicer? That'd be cool. smile.gif
